The Heart of UTSA

Through expanded collections, modernized spaces, and community-focused support, UTSA Libraries remain central to academic life

With 1.6 million visitors walking through the doors each year, UTSA Libraries are the heartbeat of the university experience. For generations of Roadrunners, they have been both a place to study and a trusted space for discovery, creativity and connection. During the Be Bold Campaign, this role only grew stronger as generous donors and targeted investments helped the Libraries expand their reach and impact.

One of the most visible transformations during the campaign was the renovation of the third floor of the John Peace Library. Once a dim and outdated space, it now features bright, open study areas, collaborative work zones, and upgraded infrastructure. New windows fill the floor with natural light, and the updated layout was influenced by student feedback.

The renovation focused on more than just physical improvements. It aimed to enhance the student experience by creating an environment for focused learning, connection, and a sense of belonging.

Expanded technologies, equipment lending, and research support now better meet the needs of UTSA’s growing academic community. For many students, the JPL has become a second home and a key part of their academic journey.

At the same time, donors enhanced the Libraries’ Special Collections, helping preserve culturally significant archives and expand access for researchers.

New additions included the Diana Kennedy Culinary Archive and Mexican Cookbook Collection, the Beckstead, Lerma, and Annala Art Collection, the Happy Foundation Research Collection, and a growing Chicano Research Collection.

Endowments like the Kathy Furukawa Memorial Library Fund and several planned gifts further strengthened preservation efforts and student support. Together, these investments ensure that UTSA Libraries remain a vital hub of academic life, inspiring curiosity and honoring the many stories that shape our world.
