As the hometown university of Military City USA, UT San Antonio serves one of the nation’s largest active and retired military populations. Veterans represent 7% of the student body at the university and military-affiliated students (which includes active duty, ROTC and military family members) make up 16%.
UT San Antonio has become well-known for its commitment to supporting military-affiliated students. The university was recently ranked No. 53 out of 304 institutions in the 2024 Best for Vets: Colleges list by Military Times. UT San Antonio’s Center for Military Affiliated Students (CMAS) has emerged as a national model for student-veteran support in higher education. The university’s military-affiliated students enjoy innovative programming, such as priority registration and tailored orientation for veterans, as well as professional development and wellness workshops. CMAS has also collaborated with other university departments on processes that make the college experience more seamless for military-affiliated students, who often take nontraditional paths to earn a college degree.
This November, Sombrilla Magazine highlights several stories of the Roadrunner military community. Some found their calling after they served. Others found their purpose in serving those who served. All of them found support in a university community that embraced their identity.
