Be Bold: A Campaign for Our Future accelerated UTSA’s research enterprise, securing over $40.5 million to support faculty, including the creation of 20 new endowed positions. More than $225 million was also raised to advance research excellence initiatives.
These investments demonstrate the deep trust donors have placed in UTSA’s faculty. Their support is paramount in helping UTSA deliver on its promise to be a national model for student success and research excellence, and plays a pivotal role in affirming UTSA as a nationally recognized Tier One public research institution.
These five faculty members support student learning, advance graduate research and drive faculty-led discovery with real-world impact in San Antonio and beyond.

Glenn and Ann Biggs Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship (est. 2023)
Joseph Broschak, professor and chair of management, is advancing scholarship that explores how organizational structures and labor markets shape business performance. Broschak is building on the Biggs family's vision by fostering research that deepens our understanding of innovation and supports the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Manuel P. Berriozábal, PhD and María Antonietta Berriozábal Endowed Chair (est. 2023)
A nationally recognized scholar in mathematical biology, Erika Tatiana Camacho, professor of mathematics and neuroscience, uses advanced modeling to study retinal health and visual impairment. Her research helps uncover new insights into degenerative eye diseases and potential methods to reduce vision loss. As the Berriozábal Chair, she is advancing UTSA’s mission in STEM research and honoring the legacy of two leaders devoted to education and community engagement.

Tom C. Frost Distinguished University Chair for Business Excellence & Bodenstedt Chair for the Dean of Business
Jonathan Halbesleben, dean of the Carlos Alvarez College of Business, holds the Tom C. Frost Distinguished University Chair for Business Excellence, established by Carlos and Malú Alvarez in honor of longtime UTSA advocate Tom C. Frost. As one of the most significant investments in academic leadership made through the Be Bold Campaign, the position supports initiatives that enhance student outcomes and faculty research. With additional support from the Bodenstedt Chair, Halbesleben has advanced collegewide efforts such as Career Compass, a required professional development program that prepares students to enter the workforce with confidence and real-world skills.

Wayne and Julie Fagan Endowed Fellowship in Mechanical Engineering (est. 2020)
Guillermo Araya, associate professor of mechanical engineering, leads research in computational fluid dynamics, heat transfer and scientific visualization. His work applies advanced thermal-fluid modeling to aerospace and industrial systems, helping improve energy efficiency, safety and performance in everything from aircraft engines to cooling systems. The fellowship supports his mission to advance discovery, mentor future engineers and position UTSA as a national leader in mechanical engineering research.

Charlie and Ann Bohl Deacon Endowed Chair (est. 2021)
Juan Manuel Sanchez, senior associate dean for faculty success and research, is a nationally recognized researcher in executive compensation, financial reporting and corporate governance. Support from the Deacon Chair has enabled him to launch a part-time PhD program in Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence and lead efforts responsible for boosting graduate enrollment by more than 80 percent. Sanchez invests in faculty development and research initiatives, helping the college earn recognition among the top 100 business schools in the nation for faculty research productivity.
